Think Globally, Act Locally:
Visitors to this website are obviously concerned about the future of our environment. The best way to show concern and learn how to protect our valued habitats, species and ecosystems is to become involved in a “local project”. The mantra, “Think Globally, Act Locally” should be followed in our backyard. To further this aim, we are hosting an invitation to join in a “Public Hearing” for a local mining project in Worth Township near Slippery Rock, Butler County PA.. It’s called Mine # 47 – Application #10070304. We call it the Jacksville Esker Alert. The Esker can be seen and reached from West Liberty Rd. at the intersection of Mt. Union Rd. – near Swope Rd. (See Map).
Attend the Hearing – Voice Concern – Write Letters:
A public hearing is being held to give the public an opportunity to provide oral or written comments on the project which involves the tail of the Jacksville Esker. This Esker, a remnant of the last ice age, is regarded by the DCNR (PA Dept. of Conservation and Natural Resources) as one of the outstanding scenic geological features of Pennsylvania. What the DCNR says about the Jacksville Esker
Not only is it scenic and unique, but the Esker is located near wetlands, farmlands, and waterways. Opening this portion of the Esker to mining could set in motion a chain of interlocking events that will forever change the local habitat of a community. Public participation is an integral part of environmental decision making, and it is the policy of the PA Department of Environmental Protection that applications should provide for effective involvement of the public – local residents, the greater Butler County community, as well as concerned citizens anywhere.
