DEP will host a public hearing on Tuesday, February 19, 2008.
At 5:00 pm an informational session will be held for those interested in reviewing the mining plans. DEP staff will be available to answer questions during this informational session.
At 6:00 pm the actual hearing will begin.
Location of the meeting is at the Slippery Rock Area High School, 201 Kiester Road, Slippery Rock, PA(See map)
The purpose of the hearing is to give the public the opportunity to provide oral and/or written comments to the DEP for their consideration in approving or disapproving the surface mining permit application. If anyone wishes to speak (maximum of 10 minutes), they may call the Knox District DEP Office at 814-797-1191 to be placed on the schedule. If you don’t call, there will also be a signup sheet at the hearing. DEP suggests that your comments and/or concerns also be written and a copy submitted at the meeting. You may then read or summarize your comments orally. The public hearing will be tape recorded as well as recorded by a court stenographer for the record
If you can not attend but wish to submit written comments, you may address your letter to the following: Department of Environmental Protection, PO Box 669, Knox, PA. 16232. Comments will be accepted for two weeks following the hearing –even by attendees.
After the hearing, DEP will summarize and group all comments according to subject matter. They will then respond to the comments in a Comment and Response Document. Each person who provides oral or written comments will receive a copy of the Comment and Response Document at the time the permit application is approved or denied, or earlier if appropriate. As an alternative, the document may be posted to the regional web page, and a notice of availability sent to each person who provides testimony at the hearing.
