DEP welcomes and encourages the public to send letters of comment, concern, or objections regarding the permit application and proposed mining activity. Citizens often have knowledge of local features such as small streams, springs, flora, fauna, wind patterns, etc. that the mining company and DEP might not be aware of. Therefore, it is important that as many people as possible send letters and give their input, (after looking at the plans and maps if possible), so that DEP can make a fair and accurate decision about the permit application.
If you are not able to see the plans, however, your letters are still very important. Since this site includes the proposed mining of a Pennsylvania Geologic Heritage Site, the Jacksville Esker, the issue is one of historic and cultural significance to people from all areas. If you would like to know that the esker will be here for future generations to see, study, and enjoy, please let DEP and your elected officials know. And if you are concerned about the wetlands, loss of farmland, possible pollution, heavy truck traffic, or any other concerns, please let them know that, too.
DEP, whose responsibility it is to protect the air, land, and water of the
Commonwealth states that “public participation is an integral part of environmental decision making”. DEP also states, as does Glacial Sand and Gravel, that the mining company wants to be a good neighbor and as such would like to know people’s concerns. So you can see how important your views and comments are, and if you would like to
speak up, now is your chance to do so. This is your chance to be heard.
How to write a letter of concern:
Please see the sample letters for ideas – you may have other concerns (See Sample Letters at bottom of page)
Your letter may be as brief or detailed as you like
Be sure to keep a copy for your records
Some issues such as the truck route are not under DEP jurisdiction but are handled by Penn Dot or the township supervisors. By copying your letter to these individuals, they can also see your concerns, and address them if they care to. You may add a note to these copied letters asking for a written reply.
Letters of concern are sent to the mining company as required by law.
You may read your letter at the public hearing, if you like, and add to or summarize it. Reading your letter aloud allows your fellow residents to know your concerns and may help to open dialogue with your neighbors.
Send your letter to:
