Information on the Mining Operation – Mine #47

Glacial Sand and Gravel, a mining company, a subsidiary of Snyder Associated Companies, Inc. and sister company of Allegheny Mineral recently submitted a mining permit application View Picture to the Department of Environmental Protection to mine 39.8 acres of sand and gravel in Worth Township, Butler County Pennsylvania. Located on West Liberty Road and Swope Road, three miles southwest of Slippery Rock Borough, the proposed mine site includes the easternmost end of the Jacksville Esker, a Pennsylvania geologic heritage site. What areas and activities are involved?
  • The proposed activity for this 77.6 acre permit area is to mine the eastern end of the Jacksville Esker north of West Liberty Road, just east of Swope Road, in addition to mining sand and gravel south of West Liberty Road, for a total of 39.8 acres, in the area between Mt. Union Road and Moore Road. View Picture
  • Twenty acres of topsoil are to be removed and sold.
  • The sand and gravel washing plant which is currently located near Elliott Mills on Route 108 just west of I-79 will be dismantled and reassembled in the permit area. View Picture Washing and sedimentation ponds will be built and a small 1.8 acre wetland View Picture will be removed and replaced elsewhere.
  • In addition to processing sand and gravel from this mine site, material will be brought in from 2 adjoining leased properties south on Mt. Union Road.
  • The proposed truck route for all the trucks carrying the sand and gravel and soil away from the mine site will be on Swope Road and Barron Road to Route 108 just west of Slippery Rock. The trucks will then turn left to go to Interstate 79. (View Map)
